PROGRAM NOTE
| Snapshot (2002) is a short, accessible, upbeat, colorful five minute work for orchestra. It was written for Alex Jimènez and the Tallahassee Symphony Youth Orchestra and was intended to provide the group with a challenging, yet rewarding concert opener. The piece is essentially cast in sonata form; that is the opening material returns at the end in the same key. In between these two bookends the theme is developed melodically and rhythmically, explores different keys, and is placed in contrasting musical textures. |
PRESS/QUOTES
Take a picture-perfect melody and surround it with colorful harmonies and what you get is "Snapshot," a musical composition by New York City composer James Barry.
George Lenker, The Republican (Springfield, MA)We received scores from all over the world, but one piece stood head and shoulders above the rest. The melody is constantly varied and developed motivically always with propulsive rhythms and colorful orchestration. The result is a work that is immediately engaging and distinctly American.
Holyoke Civic Symphony, Music Director, David KidwellYou've written a fine piece of music which just happens to be especially well conceived, orchestrated and executed to serve young orchestra players. At the same time, my guess is that if the right professional orchestra conductor hears the music it will be played at
that level as well.
