PINK
PROGRAM NOTE
| Pink (2000) is based on the Andy Warhol work, Sixteen Jackies (1964). What intrigued me most about the Warhol work was the use of repetition, the use of a female icon, and his appropriation of the photograph of Jackie Onasis. To create the work I followed a similar plan. I appropriated songs from three current female pop princesses: Britney Spears, Oops I did it again, Christina Aguilera, Genie in a Bottle, and Mandy Moore's, Candy. From this borrowed musical palette I choose melodic and harmonic elements that interested me and presented them in altered forms. I decided to model the formal structure of the music on the rise and fall of a pop star. The beginning of the work, after a dreamy introduction, begins with a bang the composition comes to an end with a catchy canon, symbolic of that one hit, that eventually fades away. |
