PINK

PROGRAM NOTE

Pink (2000) is based on the Andy Warhol work, Sixteen Jackies (1964). What intrigued me most about the Warhol work was the use of repetition, the use of a female icon, and his appropriation of the photograph of Jackie Onasis. To create the work I followed a similar plan. I appropriated songs from three current female pop princesses: Britney Spears, Oops I did it again, Christina Aguilera, Genie in a Bottle, and Mandy Moore's, Candy. From this borrowed musical palette I choose melodic and harmonic elements that interested me and presented them in altered forms. I decided to model the formal structure of the music on the rise and fall of a pop star. The beginning of the work, after a dreamy introduction, begins with a bang…the composition comes to an end with a catchy canon, symbolic of that one hit, that eventually fades away.
